Indonesian Dignitary Meets with SLBSC President and Board MembersJune 2011 On June 16, 2011, Indonesian House Representative Robby Sirait met with SLBSC President Joe Passanise, Board Member Thomas Bottini and Mr. Stephen Rutherford, World Affairs Council Director, at Armstrong Teasdale Law Offices in St. Louis to discuss education opportunities and the role of education in a democracy. After reviewing SLBSC’s history, events and photos via the SLBSC website, Mr. Passanise provided a packet of booklets and pamphlets about educating citizens on democracy to Rep. Sirait from the Center for Civic Education. Rep. Sirait initiated discussion about the need for college education for poor young adults in Indonesia. Seizing an opportunity to address this concern, Mr. Passanise has since contacted the U.S. Dept. of State which has committed to communicate with Rep. Sirait about U.S. current and future plans for helping Indonesia educate their young adults in the low economic category. link | Cultural Exchange - St. Louis Participants2010-2011 Students from St. Joan of Arc School and Soldan International Studies High School in St. Louis exchanged projects through the mail and internet with students in Bogor Indonesia. link | Bogor Event Celebrates Cultural ExchangeMay 2011 Dr. Gisela Webb attended an event sponsored by Mayor Diani in Bogor celebrating the first year of the Cultural Exchange between students in Bogor and St. Louis. Students met with Dr. Webb on behalf of SLBSC Cultural Exchange Director Helena Webb, discussing the benefits of educational exchange and inter-cultural communication. Gifts from the students were presented to Dr. Webb and Certificates of Excellence and Leadership were presented from SLBSC to students and teachers participating in the exchange. Students were encouraged to participate and to bring topics of interest in the discussions with the Mayor and Dr. Webb. link | Cultural Exchange Kick-offCultural Exchange Program kicks off first cultural exchange with two Saint Louis and two Bogor schools participating. Click here for more information link | Mayor of Bogor Visits Saint LouisDecember 2010 The Honorable Diani Budiarto, Mayor of the city of Bogor, arrived in Saint Louis for a whirlwind visit December 1 & 2, 2010. The Mayor was accompanied by Bogor Council Chairman Honorable Mufti Faoqui Daryat, the Mayor’s Chief of Staff Mr. Hari Sucahyo and Dr. Syarifah Iis Aisyah from Bogor Agricultural Univeristy, as well as Consul for Economic Affairs Agus Buana. Read more...link | Ambassador Honored Guest at FundraiserNovember 2010 On November 29, 2010 SLBSC hosted a fundraising dinner for Javanese victims of Mt. Merapi volcano eruption. Honored guest His Excellency Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Indonesian Ambassador to the U.S. spoke at the event and personally greeted guests. The event raised $1,300 for the Indonesian Red Cross. link | Indonesian Community CelebrationSeptember 2010 St. Louis-Bogor Sister Cities committee hosted an Indonesian Community Celebration at JC Penney building at UMSL featuring speakers from the Indonesian Consul General, World Trade Center Saint Louis, and UMSL International Studies Department representatives. Special performances of Balinese dance and the national anthems for both countries took place celebrating Indonesian Independence Day. Authentic Indonesian cuisine was prepared by local Indonesians who attended and participated in the event with family and friends. link | Alex Soetjipto Visits BogorMay 2010 Alex Soetjipto travelled to Bogor to meet with the Honorable Diani Budiarto, Mayor of the City of Bogor, the local Chamber of Commerce, and to speak before an assembly of Department of Education officials as well as students. link | Indonesian Consul General Visits Saint LouisOn March 31, 2010 the new Consul General to the United States from Indonesia, Honorable Consul General Benny Bahanadewa, visited Saint Louis to generate relationships and opportunities between the Saint Louis business community and Bogor, Indonesia.
